Pumpkin Seed Project

Friday in class we did a pumpkin seed project! We took this pumpkin and estimated how many seed were inside this pumpkin!!

Before we got started we made a class estimate of how many seeds we thought was in the pumpkin. Here is what the boys and girls guessed:

Next, I cut the top of the pumpkin and scooped out all the seeds.

I scooped out the seeds on our tables for the boys and girls to dig out and count.

The boys and girls worked hard counting and sorting out the seeds!!

We recorded our data on the board:

We had 589 seeds in our pumpkin!! I still can't believe there were that many in that pumpkin!! I bagged them up and am going roasted them for the kids to enjoy on Monday!

The kids had a great time doing this fun project!!

Math Fun

So, I have been a horrible blogger, but I have been taking pictures, just not uploading them! :) Here are a few of what we have been doing in math.

We learned TouchPoints to help us with memorizing our addition facts!

Our new math textbooks came with fun math centers. They are games based on the skills we are learning and the kids get to play them when they finish their math assignments. They LOVE them!!!

Math is one of our favorite times of the day!!

OREO Project

We have been busy working on a special project. The project is called the O.R.E.O. Project – which stands for Our Really Exciting Online Project –and is hosted by a teacher in Southern California. This will be her 13th year of hosting this project. Since 1999, students from every state in the US, almost every Canadian province, and several other countries have participated in this project and submitted their results online to share with each other. Each student will have 2 chances to stack as many oreos as they can. (There are certain rules involved that were explained when we hosted the project in our classroom.) After every participant has recorded their stack counts, we will take everyone’s highest count and average them together for ONE CLASS AVERAGE. Then submit them to the Projects by Jen webpage and compare our results.

Here are the pics from our attempts!!

We had lots of fun!! The highest stack was 22 and the lowest was 13. We still have to complete one more attempt and then we will get our average and submit it to Projects by Jen!

Wall of Hope

Today was a special day at MES, not only did we have our grandparents come to visit (sorry I didn't get any pics because the kids that didn't have grandparents come had to go back to the room with me and eat lunch), we also commemorated the 10th anniversary of the September 11th events. The kids had a hard time understanding what happened that day, so we watched a fantastic clip from Nick News that explained the events in a way that is kid-friendly.

We also went outside for a special ceremony. We created a Wall of Hope, if you drive by MES and look at the fence you will see many ribbons tied to the fence. Several classes, including ours, participated by tying ribbons to the fence and then each 5th grade class released 10 balloons in honor of the 10th anniversary.

Tying our ribbons to the fence!

Waiting for the ceremony to start.

Some of the 3rd grade ribbons.

Each 5th grade class had a different color balloon.

We counted down and they released their balloons!!

 There they go!!

What a great way to remember and honor all those effected by the events of that day!!
